Dear New Mom Zaneta,
I see you. Sitting in the rocker at 3 a.m., praying the baby falls asleep. Wondering if you’re doing anything “right.” Feeling love so fierce it terrifies you, mixed with exhaustion so deep you can barely think straight.
Here’s what I wish I could whisper in your ear:
- You’re doing better than you think. Your baby doesn’t need perfection. She needs you — messy, tired, loving you.
- The days are long, but the years are short. One day you’ll celebrate her first birthday and wonder how it flew by and despite all the chaos, wish you could do it all again.
- Take the help. You don’t have to be everything to everyone. Resting is brave and helps you enjoy the scenery on the journey.
- Capture the tiny moments. Her hand gripping your finger. The way she fits into your chest. Her eyes locked with yours as they disappear behind heavy eyelids.
- Trust your instincts. They’re stronger than you realize. Some days all the “right” stuff doesn’t work. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you or your baby. Tomorrow is a new day. Breathe.
- Release your expectations. Have your plan for: sleep, feeding, taking baby on outings, visitors, going back to work, losing the baby weight etc.–but hold them loosely. Pivot as needed to prioritize a healthy mom and baby! Everything else can wait.
This past year with my third (and final) baby taught me: Motherhood is a thousand small victories stitched together by pure love.
