Hi, I’m Dr. David Evans, husband to Zaneta, founder of Indy Night Nanny. I am a chiropractor with over 15 years of experience and the owner of Glow Stick Chiropractic. Like Zaneta, I get to support families as well, yet in a different but complementary way.
In honor of Father’s Day, I’m sharing how chiropractic care can often be overlooked when considering ways to support moms and babies alike. Most loving fathers are constantly looking for ways to help their pregnant wife and newborn as they step into this new role of parenthood. A new mom can be deep in the postpartum trenches and need a partner who suggests practical solutions to help the family thrive and regular chiropractic care can do wonders for healing and soothing tender nervous systems during this time. Knowing when to suggest services like chiropractic care is one small way a dad can look out for mom and baby. This can start before even taking your newborn home by doing a visit in the hospital with your little newborn. Other options include a house call visit in the comfort of your own home, or if able to travel, seeing me that first week in my office.
Here are the many reasons I believe why chiropractic care during the pregnancy and the newborn stage can be a game-changer.
Benefits During Pregnancy
Pregnancy changes everything—your posture, your balance, even how your organs function. Chiropractic adjustments can help:
- Reduce back, neck, and joint pain
- Improve pelvic alignment (important for easier delivery)
- Optimal baby position with the Webster Technique
- Enhance overall comfort and mobility
Studies have shown that chiropractic care can also potentially lead to shorter labor times and reduced need for pain interventions. I often show my patients basic exercises they can incorporate into daily care leading up to birth to help them feel their best.
Benefits Postpartum
Giving birth often leads to instant relief giving space back in your own body once a baby is born, but your body has so much to do in this phase. Besides providing for a newborn, it also must find its way back to normal and chiropractic care can help this process go much more smoothly. Focuses postpartum include:
- Relieve new back & neck pain, shoulder, elbow and wrist pains as you carry around your sweet little bundle or adapt to nursing positions
- Ensure pelvic alignment as organs return back to their place
- Assist with keeping hips in alignment–be sure to alternate arms you use to carry your baby, especially as they get bigger
Benefits for NewbornsBirth is beautiful—but it’s also physically intense for babies. Young families are some of my favorite clients because just like the nannies, I get to offer some gentle guidance and encouragement during such a special time in their lives. Taking a newborn to a chiropractor doesn’t have to be intimidating—at our office, we use the lightest touch techniques designed specifically for newborns and pregnant moms. Gentle chiropractic adjustments can:
- Help ease colic symptoms
- Improve breastfeeding latch (especially if they’re favoring one side)
- Support healthy digestion & immune function
- Decrease acid reflux symptoms
- Support normal bowel movements
- Encourage better sleep
